Please print this PDF file and read it carefully before beginning your work.

Download

If you have FileMaker Pro 8 or 9 installed, please follow the instructions for downloading and opening the Template version.

If you have don't have FileMaker Pro 8 or 9 installed, or if you only have FileMaker Pro 7 or earlier, please follow the instructions for downloading and running the Runtime version.

Runtime version

1. Download and unzip either the Mac OS X (v0.75, 37MB) or Windows runtime files (v0.75, 27MB). If unclear on how to "download and unzip" please refer to the steps below.

2. In the APiCS folder that results, open the runtime program file called !open_APiCS. Its icon may look like one of those shown below. Note that the runtime version can take a while to open, and you may not see any screen activity for a few seconds after double-clicking the icon.

3. After the database opens for the first time, you will be prompted to select your language*. Do so and click the adjacent "set lang" button. This will initialize the database for your language, and may take several minutes to complete.

*Note: If your language does not appear in the drop-down list, please follow the instructions below for Creating a new language record.

4. Click the "Help" button for a guided tour, plus the guidelines and a glossary of terms

Some important notes on the runtime file set:

  • Please do not rename or move any file in the runtime file set, otherwise the database may not open properly or function as expected.
  • Amongst the files in the runtime folder is a file called APiCS_data. This file contains all your data and is the only file in the runtime set that needs to be sent when sharing or submitting your database.
  • Your APiCS_data file should always reside in the same folder as its runtime program file/s.
  • Please never double-click/open APiCS_data directly. Always open it by opening its program file, !open_APiCS.
Minimum System Requirements:

Windows: Pentium III 500 MHz or higher; 256MB of RAM; SVGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution video adapter and display; Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4), Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

Mac OS X: Macintosh computer with PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor; Macintosh computer with Intel-based processor; 256MB of RAM; Mac OS X 10.3.9 for PowerPC processors; 10.4.5 for Intel-based processors

Template version

1. Download and unzip APiCS.zip (v0.75, 6MB). If unclear on how to "download and unzip" please refer to the steps below.

2. In the APiCS folder that results, open the database file called APiCS_data.

Please note: This template will not open or work as expected with versions of FileMaker Pro prior to 8.

Creating a new language record

  • Browse to the Languages layout by clicking the Layout selector (highlighted in yellow in this screenshot)
  • Create a new record by selecting Records > New Record
  • Enter your language name
  • Click the "Main layout" navigator button to return to the main layout

How to download and unzip

Note that the steps outlined here will vary depending on your operating system, web browser, etc, but the basic principles are the same.

  • After clicking once on the link, you may (or may not) be prompted for what to do. If prompted, select "Save", not "Open"...

...and browse to your desktop and save there...

  • Once downloaded you should see the downloaded file on your desktop. If your web browser is set to download automatically, you'll need to find where.
  • Double-click the downloaded file, but IMPORTANTLY, don't open any contents visible within. You must first extract the contents before opening them. Under Mac OS X this extraction is often done automatically when you download and/or open a zip file. Under Windows, this can usually be done by dragging the contents to your desktop.
